Brightening our future, one life at a time
Brightening our future, one life at a time
For Donate Life Indiana, 2022 was a year of growth and excitement. We pursued new avenues for Hoosiers to say “yes” to donation, which we know is key to increasing the number of registered donors. Education also remained a top priority as we sought to teach more Hoosiers the importance of becoming organ donors.
On behalf of Donate Life Indiana, we are proud to share our accomplishments in 2022 and look forward to continued donation and transplantation education in 2023.

Indiana Donor Registry
In 2022, Donate Life Indiana continued to enhance the state registry. This included enhanced search capabilities, additional reporting functionality and the addition of documentation in Spanish. We also launched the Scan App, which allows Donate Life Indiana to scan an Indiana-issued ID or driver’s license and automatically add that individual to the registry.
Donor Registration Partners
Our partners help us raise awareness about organ and tissue donation. They also help Donate Life Indiana increase the number of registrations each year. We thank our partners for continuing to save lives by helping Hoosiers sign up to be organ and tissue donors every day.
Youth Education Program
Donate Life Indiana’s youth education program focuses on reaching Hoosiers who are making timely donation decisions. The team works tirelessly to educate students before they go to the BMV to get an ID, learner’s permit or driver’s license, and are asked the important question, “Do you want to be an organ donor?” Learn more about our youth education program here.
In 2022, Donate Life Indiana completed 780 school presentations and educated nearly 22,000 students through our youth education program in classrooms alone. A portion of this growth is thanks in part to a strategic recruitment campaign launched to engage new educators in our program. We also revamped how we book school presentations and placed more ownership on our educator partners to include their peers in the process. Finally, we developed an expanded partnership with the Indiana Department of Education that will include a video component to teach educators about our program.
Donate Life Indiana continued to pursue partnerships with youth-focused organizations, offering the opportunity for engagement outside of the classroom. We expanded our partnership with Junior Achievement, participating in its JobSpark event in Evansville, Indiana, for the first time in person. We also developed a relationship with the National FFA Organization that allowed Donate Life Indiana to have a presence at the 2022 National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, which drew more than 69,000 middle through high school students from throughout the U.S.
Further, in 2022, we added five new Student Organ Donation Advocates chapters. These SODA groups help raise awareness about organ donation and transplantation and increase donor registrations by signing up new organ and tissue donors outside of the classroom. Donate Life Indiana now leads the nation with eight SODA chapters in the state. In 2022, our SODA chapters signed up more than 80 new donors.
National Donate Life Month
Each April, we celebrate National Donate Life Month in multiple ways. This year, we implemented a months-long media and social media campaign, distributed Donate Life standard-size and garden-size flags to businesses across the state for display, provided content and displays to community partners, and much more.
In 2022, we enjoyed our first-ever Donate Life Day at Cabela’s/Bass Pro Shops. Donate Life Indiana spokesman and NASCAR great Ryan Newman greeted a large crowd of customers and signed autographs for fans. We hosted a raffle and provided donation education to hundreds of Hoosiers with a connection to hunting and fishing.
To generate conversations about donation around the community, we conducted a #DuckDuckJeep campaign. The concept of “ducking” is prominent in the Jeep community, so Donate Life Indiana purchased branded rubber duckies and affixed a promotional card explaining what Donate Life Month is to encourage Jeep owners to share our message on social media.
We also partnered with Donate Life Kentucky to light up the Indiana side of the Big 4 Bridge, which spans the Ohio River at Louisville, Kentucky. For the first time, the entire bridge was adorned with blue and green lights to heighten awareness about Donate Life’s important mission.
Several organizations, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and AES Indiana, joined us in celebrating National Donate Life Month by lighting up their facilities with blue and green.
Team Indiana
Donate Life Indiana accompanied Team Indiana to the 2022 Transplant Games of America. Twenty-four team members traveled to San Diego, California, and participated in more than 15 events, ranging from bowling and pickleball to basketball and darts. Team Indiana came home with a host of medals, new friendships and an ever-growing appreciation for their gift of life.
2022 Finances
Monetary donations supporting Donate Life Indiana help fund our outreach and education efforts around the need for organ and tissue donations. All figures are calculated using accrual-based accounting.
Donate Life Indiana receives $25 for each specialty license plate sold by the BMV.
During transactions at the BMV (online or in-person), Hoosiers are asked if they would like to donate $1 or more to support Donate Life Indiana.
This includes Facebook fundraisers, memorial donations and public donations.
